The primary key to getting a free upgrade is your relationship with the airline, the flight crew, and the counter staff. One of the best ways to begin a healthy relationship with an airline is to join the airline’s frequent flyer program. If either you or the person traveling with you is a part of that program, then you are literally miles ahead of the game already. In contrast, if you had been inconvenienced in the past by the airline, it is potentially wise to mention this incident or incidents to the airline staff when inquiring about possible upgrade availability.

The most common reason that passengers get upgraded on a flight is due to capacity. If a flight is overbooked, then often some passengers from coach will be moved to first class. If it is overbooked completely, then you may be requested to give up a coach seat on the current flight to likely fly in an upgraded seat on the next flight. There is also the possibility of a flight having too few passengers in an area of the plane and the weight will be rebalanced by moving some passengers from coach to first class.

One aspect of this entire process, that many people may overlook, is how polite and pleasant the passenger is. A customer who is kind and courteous to the airline employees is generally much more likely to be considered for any upgrades which may arise. Pay special attention to how you treat the attendants. It may come as a surprise, but they will potentially comment to each other if a certain passenger is especially pleasant!

Attire is yet another aspect you must certainly consider. While it may seem to be a sure thing, wearing a suit is not generally advisable as most of the people in first and business class will not be wearing one either. A dress shirt and a nice pair of casual or dress slacks is advisable for a gentlemen, and the equivalent blouse and slacks or skirt for the women is equally advisable. This certainly isn’t an absolute, but it will most likely get you the upgrade easier than if you wear gym shorts and a t-shirt.

Timeliness is yet another aspect of the upgrade game that can also play a potentially important role. Arriving early for the flight is actually not the best way to get an upgrade at the last minute. In fact, it is generally better to arrive as late as possible while still within reason. You don’t want to arrive so late that the staff or yourself have to rush about, yet you do want to give the plane some time to fill up so the staff can more easily gauge the final capacity. This can make it easier to inquire about an upgrade at the counter.
